Dr. Ehtsham Haq brings over two decades of sustained executive leadership across clinical, academic, and organizational settings. At the Birmingham VA Healthcare System, he served as Chief of Mental Health Services for over a decade and later as Director of Telehealth Services, while simultaneously holding governance roles on the Medical Staff Executive Committee, Professional Standards Board, Physician Pay Panel, Peer Review Committees, and the VHA Disciplinary Appeals Board.As the founder of the APPNA Alabama Chapter and a former Chief Resident at UAB, he has shaped physician communities from the ground up. His leadership training portfolio — spanning Disney Institute Executive Training, VHA's Leaders Developing Leaders Program, Crucial Conversations, and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People — reflects a deliberate, lifelong investment in becoming a more effective leader at every stage of his career.

Academic Appointments & Contributions

Dr. Ehtsham Haq's academic contributions reflect a career defined by teaching, mentorship, and institutional leadership in medical education. As a Clinical Professor at the UAB School of Medicine and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association — one of the field's most prestigious recognitions — he has shaped the next generation of psychiatrists through decades of residency training and direct mentorship. He established and directed the VA-site Psychiatry Residency Program, served on the UAB School of Medicine Admissions Committee, and has supervised externships for Pakistani residency applicants and local graduates continuously since 2002. His 2023 appointment to the APA Caucus on Social Determinants of Mental Health underscores his ongoing commitment to advancing the intersection of psychiatry, equity, and public health — ensuring his academic voice remains relevant and forward-looking.
